Lego Engineers & Beyond

Saco Parks and Recreation is excited for the return of Lego Robotics and Engineering with a brand new take on the program!  We are offering three different sessions designed for specific grades featuring age-appropriate activities and equipment for Engineers in kindergarten through 5th grade.

All Engineers will operate the Lego Spike Essential & Prime Systems and the Lego Mindstorm Systems.  With these products, the Engineers will learn about simple machines, gears, and basic robotics coding.  Not only will the Engineers play with Lego, but they will also practice Teamwork, Brainstorming, Experimentation & Hypothesis - all essential skills of STEM work!

With the success of our fall 2023 series, our hope for this Lego Engineers Program is that there will be a 4-week session registration available four times per school year, and this January block is Session 2.  We ask that your child register for a maximum of 2 sessions per school year so that we can serve as many Lego Robotics Engineers as we can.  Registrations will be monitored by the SPR Office.  Wait listed participants who are not added to the session will be offered a spot in the next session.

Tentative date for Session 4: May 2024

REGISTRATIONS
Maximum participants: 12 per grade group
Minimum registrations required to hold program: 4 per grade group
Lego Engineers sessions are intentionally designed to be small to ensure a high level of personalized instruction. We have a limited number of Lego systems kits. For these reasons, we are not able to expand registrations beyond 12 participants per session. Wait lists and other sessions at later dates will be available – more information below. As noted in the program description, attendees may only participate in a max of 2 sessiosn per school year.

ASSISTANCE FROM FAMILIES
Drop Off Grades K-2: for participants in the Engineers in Training and Junior Engineers groups, the parent or guardian will stay at the Community Center in a waiting area nearby for the duration of the session to assist their child with any breaks they might need. Parents may be invited into sessions to help their child focus if needed.
Parent Volunteers for Grades 3-5: for our Senior Engineers group, we are looking for 4 parent volunteers to assist with the projects. For more information about volunteering, please contact Steve Brown at sbrown@sacomaine.org.
